Swedish Center Party celebrates with tyrants Vasa and Karl X Gustav
Warm welcome. Johan Linander is one of very few Members of Parliament that has realized why it’s wrong to celebrate a Swedish National Day on 6 June. The reason behind the date is Gustav Vasa (article in Swedish), that was crowned as King of Sweden on that very day in 1523. But as Mr Linander points out, Vasa was nothing but a cruel tyrant. Linander suggests that Sweden rather ought to celebrate democracy. Excellent! (read my article on this subject here).
Now, on 18 thru 20 June the Center Party will have its Party Congress, and this time it will take place in Stockholm. On 19 June all leading politicians of the party will celebrate an elegant dinner at Nordiska muséet, a museum founded a little more than 100 years ago by a Swedish nationalist.
Guests will be welcomed by a huge statue of Gustav Vasa inside the building, and another huge statue of king Karl X Gustav in front of the building. The latter is responsible for Sweden’s conquest of Scania in 1645-58. Scania happens to be MP Linander’s ancestrous home…
Could the Center Party have chosen a worse place to celebrate at?
